- 動辞書形 + まい
- 動よう形 + か + 動辞書形 + まいか
Explanation
Used to express strong intention not to do something (〜まい), or hesitation between doing and not doing something (〜か〜まいか).
Usage
Often used in written form. まい expresses personal resolve or denial. 〜か〜まいか indicates indecision.
Formation
Attach directly to the dictionary form of verbs.
Examples
彼は嘘をつくまいと心に決めた。
かれはうそをつくまいとこころにきめた。He decided in his heart not to lie.
買おうか買うまいか、ずっと迷っている。
かおうかかうまいか、ずっとまよっている。I've been wavering between whether to buy it or not.
