Explanation
Indicates negative intention or strong doubt. In written language, also used rhetorically to suggest 'probably not' or to cautiously ask 'might it not be...?'
Usage
Used mainly in formal writing or rhetorical questions. 〜まい often expresses refusal or a decision not to do something. 〜ではあるまいか is a softer way to present a guess or opinion.
Formation
Attach まい to dictionary form of verbs. Use すまい for する. For ではあるまいか, attach to plain form or である for nouns and na-adjectives.
Examples
何度も確認したのだから、間違いはあるまい。
なんどもかくにんしたのだから、まちがいはあるまい。We checked so many times, there’s probably no mistake.
このまま何もしないでいたら、問題は悪化するのではあるまいか。
このままなにもしないでいたら、もんだいはあっかするのではあるまいか。If we keep doing nothing, won’t the problem just get worse?
