Pattern

Used to express strong feelings like surprise, admiration, or criticism.

Often used with adjectives that describe the speaker’s emotion. Used when reacting strongly to a situation.

Attach directly to i-adjectives and na-adjectives (without だ).

こんなに美しい景色は見たことがない。なんと素晴らしいことだ。

こんなにうつくしいけしきはみたことがない。なんとすばらしいことだ。

I’ve never seen such a beautiful view. How wonderful it is!

大切な書類を失くしてしまうなんて、本当に困ったことだ。

たいせつなしょるいをなくしてしまうなんて、ほんとうにこまったことだ。

Losing such an important document—what a troublesome matter!
