Explanation
Used to express strong emotion such as surprise, admiration, or lament about how much/often something is.
Usage
Common in written or literary contexts. Often used with expressions like なんと, どんなに, いったい.
Formation
Attach to a clause with a question word (e.g., どれほど, どんなに) and a verb/adjective in plain form.
Examples
一人で子育てするのがどれほど大変なことだろう。
ひとりでこそだてするのがどれほどたいへんなことだろう。How difficult it must be to raise a child alone.
どんなに彼を待ち続けたことか、誰にもわからない。
どんなにかれをまちつづけたことか、だれにもわからない。No one knows just how long I waited for him.
