Explanation
Indicates that after a certain action happened once, nothing has occurred since. Often used with a negative result that continues.
Usage
Frequently used to express that something has not happened again since a specific past action. Often appears with negative expressions such as 'that was the last time' or 'never again'.
Formation
Attach to the past tense (Vた形) of a verb.
Examples
彼女とは一度会ったきり、連絡を取っていない。
かのじょとはいちどあったきり、れんらくをとっていない。I met her once, and haven’t contacted her since.
その本は読み始めたきり、途中でやめてしまった。
そのほんはよみはじめたきり、とちゅうでやめてしまった。I started reading the book, but stopped halfway and never resumed.
一度電話をかけたきり、返事がこなかった。
いちどでんわをかけたきり、へんじがこなかった。I called once, but never got a reply.
