〜あげく

Pattern

Indicates that after much effort or a long process, the final result (often disappointing) occurred.

Commonly used when something takes a lot of time or effort, but the outcome is not positive. The emphasis is on the drawn-out process and its result.

Attach to the past tense (Vた形) of a verb or to a noun + の.

何度も話し合ったあげく、結局その計画は中止になった。

なんどもはなしあったあげく、けっきょくそのけいかくはちゅうしになった。

After many discussions, the plan was ultimately canceled.

いろいろな病院を回ったあげく、ようやく原因がわかった。

いろいろなびょういんをまわったあげく、ようやくげんいんがわかった。

After visiting many hospitals, they finally discovered the cause.

長時間の交渉のあげく、契約は成立しなかった。

ちょうじかんのこうしょうのあげく、けいやくはせいりつしなかった。

After long negotiations, no agreement was reached.
