Explanation
Indicates that once a certain condition is true or decision is made, it is natural or expected that something should follow. Often used to express obligation, determination, or expectations.
Usage
Used to express that something is assumed as a given, and based on that, a certain judgment, intention, or call to action follows.
Formation
Attach to the plain form of verbs, or the dictionary/past form for 上は.
Examples
試合に出るからには、全力を尽くしたい。
しあいにでるからには、ぜんりょくをつくしたい。Since I’m going to compete in the match, I want to give it my all.
責任者である以上は、問題が起きたときには対応しなければならない。
せきにんしゃであるいじょうは、もんだいがおきたときにはたいおうしなければならない。As the person in charge, I must handle it when problems occur.
契約を結んだ上は、最後まで責任を持つべきだ。
けいやくをむすんだうえは、さいごまでせきにんをもつべきだ。Once you’ve signed the contract, you should take responsibility to the end.
海外で働くと決めたからには、語学力を身につける必要がある。
かいがいではたらくときめたからには、ごがくりょくをみにつけるひつようがある。Since I decided to work abroad, I need to develop my language skills.
