Pattern

Expresses that something is emotionally or psychologically difficult to do, rather than physically impossible.

Often used with verbs expressing mental actions such as 'believe', 'understand', 'imagine', or 'say'. Not used for physical inability.

Attach to the verb stem (ます-form without ます).

親友が突然亡くなったという知らせは、信じがたかった。

しんゆうがとつぜんなくなったというしらせは、しんじがたかった。

The news that my best friend suddenly passed away was hard to believe.

その行動は、常識では理解しがたい。

そのこうどうは、じょうしきではりかいしがたい。

That behavior is hard to understand by common sense.

彼の発言は、なんとも言いがたい複雑な気持ちにさせられた。

かれのはつげんは、なんともいいがたいふくざつなきもちにさせられた。

His statement made me feel something indescribably complex.

この作品には、表現しがたい魅力がある。

このさくひんには、ひょうげんしがたいみりょくがある。

This piece has a charm that is hard to express.
