Explanation
Indicates that something happened as a negative result of a particular cause or reason. Expresses regret or dissatisfaction.
Usage
Used when the speaker wants to express that something unexpected or unfortunate happened just because of a specific reason. Often followed by a negative consequence.
Formation
Attach to the past form of verbs (Vた形), to adjectives (Aな / Aい), or to nouns with である.
Examples
少し遅刻したばかりに、面接の機会を失ってしまった。
すこしちこくしたばかりに、めんせつのきかいをうしなってしまった。Just because I was a little late, I missed the chance for an interview.
財布を忘れたばかりに、友達に昼ご飯をおごってもらうことになった。
さいふをわすれたばかりに、ともだちにひるごはんをおごってもらうことになった。Just because I forgot my wallet, I had to be treated to lunch by a friend.
少し強く言ったばかりに、彼が怒って帰ってしまった。
すこしつよくいったばかりに、かれがおこってかえってしまった。Just because I spoke a bit strongly, he got angry and left.
有名人であるばかりに、どこへ行っても写真を撮られる。
ゆうめいじんであるばかりに、どこへいってもしゃしんをとられる。Just because he’s a celebrity, he gets photographed wherever he goes.
優しい人だばかりに、頼まれると断れない。
やさしいひとだばかりに、たのまれるとことわれない。Just because he’s a kind person, he can’t say no when asked.
