Explanation

Used when the degree of something is so extreme that it causes an unusual result (often negative).

Usage

Often expresses a result that goes beyond what is considered normal due to excess emotion, pressure, or condition. Commonly leads to negative or unexpected outcomes.

Formation

Attach to verbs, adjectives (Aい, Aナ) in affirmative form. Also used as あまりの + noun + に.

Examples

驚きのあまり、声が出なかった。

おどろきのあまり、こえがでなかった。

I was so surprised that I couldn't speak.

失敗を恐れるあまり、新しいことに挑戦できない人もいる。

しっぱいをおそれるあまり、あたらしいことにちょうせんできないひともいる。

Some people are so afraid of failure that they can't try anything new.

あまりの寒さ、外に出るのをあきらめた。

あまりのさむさに、そとにでるのをあきらめた。
