Formation
Attach to verbs, adjectives (Aい, Aナ) in affirmative form. Also used as あまりの + noun + に.
Examples
驚きのあまり、声が出なかった。
おどろきのあまり、こえがでなかった。I was so surprised that I couldn't speak.
失敗を恐れるあまり、新しいことに挑戦できない人もいる。
しっぱいをおそれるあまり、あたらしいことにちょうせんできないひともいる。Some people are so afraid of failure that they can't try anything new.
あまりの寒さに、外に出るのをあきらめた。
あまりのさむさに、そとにでるのをあきらめた。Because it was extremely cold, I gave up on going outside.
