Explanation
Used to express that even if something happens or is the case, it does not matter and does not affect the main point.
Usage
The following clause states something that is not influenced by the preceding condition. It is often used for the speaker's judgment, determination, or firm stance. It frequently appears together with words such as たとえ, いかに, or どんなに.
Formation
Attach と, とも, or が to the volitional form of a verb, or to forms such as イAかろう, ナAだろう, and Nだろう.
Examples
たとえ大きな地震が起ころうと、この建物はびくともしないはずだ。
たとえおおきなじしんがおころうと、このたてものはびくともしないはずだ。Even if a major earthquake were to occur, this building should not budge at all.
上司に何を言われようが、彼は自分の方針を曲げなかった。
じょうしになにをいわれようが、かれはじぶんのほうしんをまげなかった。No matter what his superior said to him, he did not bend his own policy.
ゴールまでどれほど遠かろうと、私は希望を手放さないつもりだ。
ゴールまでどれほどとおかろうと、わたしはきぼうをてばなさないつもりだ。No matter how far away the goal may be, I intend not to let go of hope.
いかに険しかろうと、争いのない社会を目指して進みたい。
いかにけわしかろうと、あらそいのないしゃかいをめざしてすすみたい。No matter how difficult the path may be, I want to move forward toward a society without conflict.
たとえ著名な学者であろうとも、家庭では一人の親にすぎない。
たとえちょめいながくしゃであろうとも、かていではひとりのおやにすぎない。Even if someone is a famous scholar, at home they are still nothing more than an ordinary parent.
