Pattern
- V意向形 + と + V辞書形 + まいと
- V意向形 + が + V辞書形 + まいが
Explanation
Used to express that whether something happens or does not happen, it makes no difference and does not affect the result.
Usage
The same verb is repeated in affirmative and negative contrast. The following clause states something that is unaffected by either condition. It is often used for the speaker's judgment, decision, or firm attitude.
Formation
Use the volitional form of a verb with と or が, and combine it with the same verb in dictionary form + まい with と or が.
Examples
山本先生は、学生たちが納得しようとするまいと、さらに専門的で難解な説明を続けた。
やまもとせんせいは、がくせいたちがなっとくしようとするまいと、さらにせんもんてきでなんかいなせつめいをつづけた。Whether the students tried to understand or not, Professor Yamamoto kept going with even more specialized and difficult explanations.
雪が降ろうが降るまいが、野球部の練習は予定どおり行われる。
ゆきがふろうがふるまいが、やきゅうぶのれんしゅうはよていどおりおこなわれる。Whether it snows or not, the baseball club's practice will be held as scheduled.
合格の可能性があろうがあるまいが、今はひたすら努力を重ねるだけだ。
ごうかくのかのうせいがあろうがあるまいが、いまはひたすらどりょくをかさねるだけだ。Whether there is a chance of passing or not, for now all I can do is keep making every effort.
