Explanation
Used to express that as soon as one action occurs, another happens almost at the same time.
Usage
Attaches to verbs that indicate instantaneous actions. The following clause states an actual event or result. It is not used with the speaker's wishes, intentions, commands, or invitations.
Formation
Attach や or や否や to the dictionary form of a verb.
Examples
私はその人の顔をちらっと見るや、三十年前に離ればなれになった恋人だとすぐにわかった。
わたしはそのひとのかおをちらっとみるや、さんじゅうねんまえにはなればなれになったこいびとだとすぐにわかった。The moment I caught a glimpse of that person's face, I immediately realized it was the lover I had been separated from thirty years ago.
子供たちは唐揚げが大好物で、食卓に並ぶや、たちまち全部なくなってしまう。
こどもたちはからあげがだいこうぶつで、しょくたくにならぶや、たちまちぜんぶなくなってしまう。The children love fried chicken, and as soon as it appears on the table, it is gone in no time.
選挙戦が始まるや否や、あちらこちらからにぎやかな声が聞こえてきた。
せんきょせんがはじまるやいなや、あちらこちらからにぎやかなこえがきこえてきた。As soon as the election campaign began, lively voices could be heard from all over.
