Pattern
- V辞書形 + なり
Explanation
Used to express that immediately after one action, another action follows in direct succession.
Usage
Often used when the second action is quick, somewhat unexpected, or done without pause. The subject is usually in the third person, and in many cases the subject before and after is the same.
Formation
Attach なり to the dictionary form of a verb.
Examples
彼はジュースを一口飲むなり、そのまま外へ飛び出していった。
かれはジュースをひとくちのむなり、そのままそとへとびだしていった。He took one sip of juice and immediately rushed outside.
課長は部屋に入ってくるなり、いきなり大声を上げた。
かちょうはへやにはいってくるなり、いきなりおおごえをあげた。The section chief came into the room and immediately raised his voice.
田中さんは携帯電話を切るなり、すぐ私の名前を呼んだ。
たなかさんはけいたいでんわをきるなり、すぐわたしのなまえをよんだ。As soon as Tanaka hung up his mobile phone, he immediately called my name.
