〜そばから

Pattern

Used to express that even though someone does something, another thing happens immediately afterward, and this tends to repeat again and again.

Often used for unfavorable, frustrating, or ineffective situations where the result does not last. It commonly implies repetition.

Attach そばから to the dictionary form or た-form of a verb.

朝から返事を書くそばから、次々と新しいメッセージが届く。

あさからへんじをかくそばから、つぎつぎとあたらしいメッセージがとどく。

From early in the morning, as soon as I write a reply, new messages keep arriving one after another.

この資料は難しい字が多くて困る。確認したそばから見慣れない漢字が現れる。

このしりょうはむずかしいじがおおくてこまる。かくにんしたそばからみなれないかんじがあらわれる。

This document is troublesome because it has so many difficult characters. No sooner do I check one than another unfamiliar kanji appears.

給料日になると、払ったそばからまた別の支払いの通知が届く。

きゅうりょうびになると、はらったそばからまたべつのしはらいのつうちがとどく。

When payday comes, no sooner have I paid one bill than a notice for another payment arrives.
