Explanation
Used to express that one thought something would be the case, but in reality the result was different.
Usage
It conveys surprise or an unexpected contrast between expectation and reality. It is used when the speaker's prediction or assumption turns out to be wrong, and the following clause states the actual result.
Formation
Attach と思いきや to the plain form. In some cases, か can appear before と思いきや.
Examples
試験問題は易しかったので、満点を取れたと思いきや、受験番号を書き忘れて無効になってしまった。
しけんもんだいはやさしかったので、まんてんをとれたとおもいきや、じゅけんばんごうをかきわすれてむこうになってしまった。The test questions were easy, so I thought I had gotten a perfect score, but then I forgot to write my examinee number and it became invalid.
あの政党は選挙で大勝したので、しばらく政権が続くかと思いきや、ほどなく支持率が落ち、一年ももたなかった。
あのせいとうはせんきょでたいしょうしたので、しばらくせいけんがつづくかとおもいきや、ほどなくしじりつがおち、いちねんももたなかった。That party won a landslide victory in the election, so I thought its administration would last for a while, but before long its support rate fell and it did not even last a year.
ようやく道路工事が終わったので、これで静かになるだろうと思いきや、すぐ隣で別の工事が始まった。
ようやくどうろこうじがおわったので、これでしずかになるだろうとおもいきや、すぐとなりでべつのこうじがはじまった。The roadwork had finally finished, so I thought it would become quiet at last, but then another construction project started right next door.
