Explanation
Used to express that when someone or something reaches a certain stage, level, or occasion, a corresponding state naturally follows.
Usage
It attaches to words showing an advanced stage, position, age, or a special occasion. The following clause states what naturally becomes the case once that stage is reached. It is not used for the speaker's wishes, intentions, or invitations.
Formation
Attach ともなると or ともなれば to a noun.
Examples
子どもも幼いうちは素直だが、高校生ともなると、親の言うことにはなかなか耳を貸さなくなる。
こどももおさないうちはすなおだが、こうこうせいともなると、おやのいうことにはなかなかみみをかさなくなる。Children are obedient when they are little, but once they become high school students, they no longer readily listen to what their parents say.
入社したてのころは自分の仕事だけで精いっぱいだったが、課長ともなれば、部下を育てる責任も負わなければならない。
にゅうしゃしたてのころはじぶんのしごとだけでせいいっぱいだったが、かちょうともなれば、ぶかをそだてるせきにんもおわなければならない。When I had just joined the company, all I could do was focus on my own work, but once someone becomes a section chief, they also have to take responsibility for developing subordinates.
人も五十代ともなれば、親の介護や自分の老後について真剣に考え始める。
ひともごじゅうだいともなれば、おやのかいごやじぶんのろうごについてしんけんにかんがえはじめる。Once people reach their fifties, they begin to think seriously about caring for their parents and about their own old age.
