Explanation
Used to express that someone does an action without clearly intending to do so, almost absentmindedly or unconsciously.
Usage
It attaches to a limited set of volitional verbs such as 見る, 聞く, or 待つ. It shows that the action is done without a clear purpose or conscious intention. The same verb often appears before and after this expression.
Formation
Attach ともなく or ともなしに to the dictionary form of a verb.
Examples
番組を見るともなく見ていたら、友人が画面に映っていて驚いた。
ばんぐみをみるともなくみていたら、ゆうじんががめんにうつっていておどろいた。I was watching the program absentmindedly, and then I was surprised to see a friend appear on the screen.
朝起きて、何をするともなくしばらくぼんやり過ごしていた。
あさおきて、なにをするともなくしばらくぼんやりすごしていた。After getting up in the morning, I spent a while in a daze without really doing anything in particular.
車内ラジオの音楽を聞くともなしに聞いていたら、いつの間にか眠くなってしまった。
しゃないラジオのおんがくをきくともなしにきいていたら、いつのまにかねむくなってしまった。I was listening to the car radio music without really paying attention, and before I knew it, I had become sleepy.
