Explanation

Used to express a state that remains unchanged as it is, or something that is so from the very beginning.

Usage

It is attached only to limited expressions. Depending on the word, it can mean 'just as it is,' 'while remaining in that state,' or 'innately/from birth.' In some fixed expressions, the meaning is idiomatic.

Formation

Attach ながらに or ながらにして to certain nouns or limited verb stems in fixed usages.

Examples

この子は生まれながらに優れた聴覚を備えていた。

このこはうまれながらにすぐれたちょうかくをそなえていた。

This child was born with exceptionally keen hearing.

通信網の発達のおかげで、今は自宅にいながらにして世界中の人とやり取りできる。

つうしんもうのはったつのおかげで、いまはじたくにいながらにしてせかいじゅうのひととやりとりできる。

Thanks to the development of communication networks, we can now interact with people all over the world while remaining at home.

この界隈には昔ながらの農村の面影が残っている。

このかいわいにはむかしながらののうそんのおもかげがのこっている。

This area still retains the old-fashioned atmosphere of a farming village.

その婦人は母親との別れを涙ながらに語った。
