Explanation

Used to express that someone or something has an undesirable tendency, trait, or habit.

Usage

It is mainly used to criticize or point out a negative tendency. It is usually not used about the speaker themself. Rather than sounding extremely harsh, it often appears with words such as どうも, 少し, or ともすれば to soften the tone.

Formation

Attach きらいがある to the dictionary form of a verb, an i-adjective, or noun + の.

Examples

彼女はどうも物事を深刻に受け止めすぎるきらいがある

かのじょはどうもものごとをしんこくにうけとめすぎるきらいがある。

She does seem to have a tendency to take things too seriously.

うちの課長は自分と異なる意見を受け入れようとしないきらいがある

うちのかちょうはじぶんとことなるいけんをうけいれようとしないきらいがある。

Our section chief tends not to accept opinions that differ from his own.

東山さんは一度言い張りだすと人の助言に耳を貸さない。やや独善のきらいがある
