Explanation
Used to express that while doing one thing, someone takes the opportunity to do another thing as well.
Usage
It often attaches to nouns or verb stems that involve movement or going somewhere, such as walking, shopping, or visiting. The main action is used as an occasion for an additional action.
Formation
Attach がてら to a noun or to the masu-stem of a verb.
Examples
散歩がてら、少し和菓子を買いに行ってきます。
さんぽがてら、すこしわがしをかいにいってきます。While out for a walk, I am going to stop by and buy some Japanese sweets.
桜の見物がてら、今度ぜひうちにも寄っていってください。
さくらのけんぶつがてら、こんどぜひうちにもよっていってください。When you go out to see the cherry blossoms, please stop by my place as well.
同僚を駅まで見送りがてら、借りていた映画のディスクを返してきた。
どうりょうをえきまでみおくりがてら、かりていたえいがのディスクをかえしてきた。While seeing my coworker off to the station, I also returned the movie disc I had borrowed.
