- N + といわず + N + といわず
Explanation
Used to express that something applies equally everywhere, to everything, or at all times, without distinction.
Usage
It lists examples from the same semantic group, often words that are related in time or space such as day and night or hands and feet. It often appears in sentences describing conditions, and frequently carries a negative nuance. It is not used in negative command forms.
Formation
Attach といわず to nouns and list two or more related examples.
Examples
川辺で遊んでいた子どもたちは、顔といわず服といわず泥だらけだった。
かわべであそんでいたこどもたちは、かおといわずふくといわずどろだらけだった。The children playing by the riverside were covered in mud, on their faces, their clothes, and everywhere else.
我が家では猫を飼っているので、廊下といわず居間といわず家中に毛が散らばっている。
わがやではねこをかっているので、ろうかといわずいまといわずいえじゅうにけがちらばっている。Since we keep a cat at home, fur is scattered all over the house, in the hallway, the living room, and everywhere else.
営業部のまこと君は平日といわず休日といわず、休む間もなく外回りをしている。
えいぎょうぶのまことくんはへいじつといわずきゅうじつといわず、やすむまもなくそとまわりをしている。Makoto from the sales department is out making rounds without rest, whether on weekdays or holidays.
