Explanation

Used to express that depending on how something is, the outcome or situation changes, or will be decided.

Usage

It attaches to nouns that indicate things with variation or range, such as attitudes, results, numbers, or circumstances. The following clause states that the result may change or be determined accordingly. With 〜いかんでは, various possible outcomes often follow.

Formation

Attach いかんだ or いかんでは to a noun.

Examples

世界大会をこの都市で開催できるかどうかは、住民の協力いかんだ。

せかいたいかいをこのとしでかいさいできるかどうかは、じゅうみんのきょうりょくいかんだ。

Whether the world tournament can be held in this city depends on the cooperation of the residents.

筆記試験は通った。あすの面談の結果いかんで採用が決まるらしい。

ひっきしけんはとおった。あすのめんだんのけっかいかんでさいようがきまるらしい。

I passed the written exam. It seems that whether I get hired will be decided depending on the result of tomorrow's interview.

参加希望者数いかんでは、見学会を取りやめなければならないかもしれない。

さんかきぼうしゃすういかんでは、けんがくかいをとりやめなければならないかもしれない。

Depending on the number of applicants, we may have to cancel the observation tour.

世論の動向いかんでは、現在の政権もそう長くは続かないだろう。
