Explanation
Used to express that even if something is true, or even if someone is in a certain position, the actual conclusion differs from what would normally be expected.
Usage
It is a formal expression. It can attach both to actual facts and to hypothetical cases. The following clause often expresses duty, resolve, the speaker's assertion, or a judgment that still holds regardless of the stated condition.
Formation
Attach といえども to a noun or to the plain form.
Examples
未成年者といえども、公共の場で自分勝手なふるまいをしてはならない。
みせいねんしゃといえども、こうきょうのばでじぶんかってなふるまいをしてはならない。Even minors must not behave selfishly in public places.
どれほど苦しい立場にあったといえども、法を破った行為は見逃されない。
どれほどくるしいたちばにあったといえども、ほうをやぶったこういはみのがされない。Even if someone was in an extremely difficult situation, an act of breaking the law cannot be overlooked.
人間は自然災害の前では無力だといえども、社会全体で備えを強める必要がある。
にんげんはしぜんさいがいのまえではむりょくだといえども、しゃかいぜんたいでそなえをつよめるひつようがある。Even if human beings are powerless in the face of natural disasters, society as a whole still needs to strengthen its preparedness.
この経済状況では、たとえ経営の達人といえども、この会社をすぐに立て直すのは難しいだろう。
このけいざいじょうきょうでは、たとえけいえいのたつじんといえども、このかいしゃをすぐにたてなおすのはむずかしいだろう。In this economic situation, even a master of management would probably find it difficult to rebuild this company quickly.
どんな資産家といえども、この著名な絵を手に入れることはできない。
どんなしさんかといえども、このちょめいなえをてにいれることはできない。No matter how wealthy someone is, they cannot obtain this famous painting.
