Explanation
Used to express that although something is not actually said aloud, someone shows an attitude or takes an action as if saying something like that.
Usage
It often follows quoted expressions such as 待ってました or だめだ. It describes the way someone behaves as if those words were spoken. It is generally not used for the speaker's own actions. この時とばかり is a commonly used expression meaning 'seizing this moment.'
Formation
Attach とばかり to a phrase or expression, often one that could be interpreted as an unspoken quotation.
Examples
菓子を買って戻ると、「よく来た」とばかりに、みんなが食卓のまわりに集まってきた。
かしをかってもどると、「よくきた」とばかりに、みんながしょくたくのまわりにあつまってきた。When I came back after buying sweets, everyone gathered around the table as if to say, 'Ah, you've arrived at last.'
赤ん坊はもう歩けないとばかりに、その場へへたり込み、とうとう泣き出してしまった。
あかんぼうはもうあるけないとばかりに、そのばへへたりこみ、とうとうなきだしてしまった。The baby dropped down on the spot as if to say, 'I can't walk anymore,' and eventually started crying.
再開発計画について意見交換が行われた。住民たちはこの時とばかり、次々に要望や不満を口にした。
さいかいはつけいかくについていけんこうかんがおこなわれた。じゅうみんたちはこのときとばかり、つぎつぎにようぼうやふまんをくちにした。An exchange of opinions was held بشأن the redevelopment plan. Seizing the moment, the residents voiced one request and complaint after another.
