Explanation

Used to express that because there is no time or emotional room to spare, one cannot remain in a certain state and must act.

Usage

It shows that the speaker feels they cannot stay as they are and must move on to the next action immediately. It often expresses urgency, impatience, or emotional pressure. The subject is usually the first person.

Formation

Attach (は)いられない to the て-form of a verb.

Examples

やると決めたから、ぐずぐずしてはいられない。今すぐ準備を進めよう。

やるときめたから、ぐずぐずしてはいられない。いますぐじゅんびをすすめよう。

I have decided to do it, so I cannot keep dawdling. Let us get the preparations moving right away.

あれほどひどいことを浴びせられて、私も黙ってはいられなかった

あれほどひどいことをあびせられて、わたしもだまってはいられなかった。

After having such terrible words thrown at me, I could not just remain silent.
