Explanation
Used to express that because one is conscious of a certain person, role, or social position, one cannot act in a way that would lower one's standing or be embarrassing.
Usage
It is used when considering how one will be seen by others or by society, and implies psychological resistance to acting otherwise. The following clause often expresses restriction on the speaker's behavior, such as having no choice but to do something or being unable to do something improper.
Formation
Attach 手前 to noun + の, the dictionary form of a verb, the ta-form, or the te-iru form.
Examples
六月末までに問題を片づけると約束した手前、どうしても最後までやり通さなければならない。
ろくがつまつまでにもんだいをかたづけるとやくそくしたてまえ、どうしてもさいごまでやりとおさなければならない。Since I promised to settle the issue by the end of June, I absolutely have to carry it through to the end.
いつも力を貸してもらっている手前、今回はこちらから協力を申し出なければならない。
いつもちからをかしてもらっているてまえ、こんかいはこちらからきょうりょくをもうしでなければならない。Since I am always receiving help from them, this time I have to be the one to offer support.
子どもたちの手前、父親がこんな乱れた格好で帰ってきてはみっともない。
こどもたちのてまえ、ちちおやがこんなみだれたかっこうでかえってきてはみっともない。In front of the children, it would be disgraceful for a father to come home looking so disheveled.
近所の人たちの手前、家に警察が来たことはなるべく知られたくない。
きんじょのひとたちのてまえ、いえにけいさつがきたことはなるべくしられたくない。For the sake of appearances before the neighbors, I do not want it known if possible that the police came to the house.
