Explanation

Used to express that someone in a position of responsibility, status, or excellence should naturally behave in a way appropriate to that role.

Usage

It attaches to nouns indicating a responsible or esteemed position. The following clause states what is expected, appropriate, or obligatory for someone of that standing.

Formation

Attach たるもの or たるものは to a noun.

Examples

指導者たるものは、基本的な法律や社会の仕組みについて理解しておかなければならない。

しどうしゃたるものは、きほんてきなほうりつやしゃかいのしくみについてりかいしておかなければならない。

A leader should understand the basic laws and the structure of society.

社会人たるもの、あいさつや約束の時間を守ることくらい、できて当然だろう。

しゃかいじんたるもの、あいさつややくそくのじかんをまもることくらい、できてとうぜんだろう。

As a working member of society, it is only natural that one should at least be able to greet others properly and keep agreed times.

教育者たるもの、厳しさの中にも思いやりを失ってはならない。
