Explanation
Used to express that even if someone tries something or even if a certain state is reached, it will be meaningless or have no useful result.
Usage
The following clause usually gives a negative judgment such as 'it is no use' or 'it will not change anything.' It is often used together with words like いくら, どんなに, or 今さら. It is not followed by the speaker's wish, intention, command, or a past factual result.
Formation
Attach ところで to the ta-form of a verb.
Examples
今になって走って行ったところで、もう集まりは終わっているだろう。
いまになってはしっていったところで、もうあつまりはおわっているだろう。Even if you run there now, the gathering has probably already ended.
どれほど事情を説明したところで、私の立場は理解してもらえないだろう。
どれほどじじょうをせつめいしたところで、わたしのたちばはりかいしてもらえないだろう。No matter how much I explain the circumstances, they probably will not understand my position.
市では品物が全部売れたところで、利益はそれほど残らない。
いちではしなものがぜんぶうれたところで、りえきはそれほどのこらない。Even if all the goods are sold at the market, there is not much profit left.
いくら謝ったところで、彼女との仲は以前のようには戻らないと思う。
いくらあやまったところで、かのじょとのなかはいぜんのようにはもどらないとおもう。No matter how much I apologize, I do not think my relationship with her will return to what it was before.
