Explanation
Used to express that someone acts as if something concerning others has nothing to do with them, paying no attention to it.
Usage
It attaches to nouns that describe the surrounding situation, such as worries, objections, anxiety, or criticism. The following clause describes behavior that ignores that situation. It often carries a nuance of coldness, indifference, or astonishment, and is usually used about other people, not the speaker.
Formation
Attach をよそに to a noun.
Examples
両親の心配をよそに、子どもは退院したその日から友達と出かけていった。
りょうしんのしんぱいをよそに、こどもはたいいんしたそのひからともだちとでかけていった。Ignoring his parents' worries, the child went out with friends from the very day he left the hospital.
地元住民の反対をよそに、橋の建設計画が着々と進められている。
じもとじゅうみんのはんたいをよそに、はしのけんせつけいかくがちゃくちゃくとすすめられている。Ignoring the opposition of local residents, the bridge construction plan is steadily moving forward.
彼は周囲の人たちの懸念をよそに、再び紛争地域の取材へ向かった。
かれはしゅういのひとたちのけねんをよそに、ふたたびふんそうちいきのしゅざいへむかった。Ignoring the concerns of those around him, he once again headed to a conflict area for reporting.
