Explanation
Used to say that if it were one extreme case, it might be understandable, but since the actual situation is quite different, the result or judgment is also different.
Usage
It is often attached to extreme or contrasting examples. The following clause usually expresses surprise, dissatisfaction, criticism, or doubt about the actual case, by contrasting it with the example mentioned before.
Formation
Attach ならいざしらず to a noun, or to the plain form such as ナ-adjective + な and noun + の.
Examples
格安の宿ならいざしらず、高級ホテルでこれほど対応が悪いなんて納得できない。
かくやすのやどならいざしらず、こうきゅうホテルでこれほどたいおうがわるいなんてなっとくできない。If it were a budget inn, that would be one thing, but I cannot accept service this poor at a luxury hotel.
祖父母の世代ならいざしらず、現代では「ふろしき」なんてめったに使わないよ。
そふぼのせだいならいざしらず、げんだいでは「ふろしき」なんてめったにつかわないよ。If it were our grandparents' generation, that would be understandable, but these days people hardly ever use something like a furoshiki.
エベレストに挑むのならいざしらず、近くの山へ行くのにそんな大げさな装備が本当に必要なのか。
エベレストにいどむのならいざしらず、ちかくのやまへいくのにそんなおおげさなそうびがほんとうにひつようなのか。If you were taking on Everest, that would be another matter, but do you really need such excessive equipment just to go to a nearby mountain?
治療が困難なのならいざしらず、よく見られる病気なのだから、そこまで不安がることはありませんよ。
ちりょうがこんなんなのならいざしらず、よくみられるびょうきなのだから、そこまでふあんがることはありませんよ。If it were a disease that was difficult to treat, that would be one thing, but since it is a common illness, there is no need to worry that much.
