Explanation
Used to describe a state that looks as if something is just about to happen.
Usage
It expresses that something is not actually happening, but the state is so close to it that it almost seems that way. It often describes unusual or intense situations.
Formation
Attach んばかりだ to the nai-stem of a verb. For する, use せんばかりだ.
Examples
弟は悔しそうな顔をしていた。今にも泣かんばかりだった。
おとうとはくやしそうなかおをしていた。いまにもなかんばかりだった。My younger brother looked frustrated. He seemed just about ready to burst into tears.
母は頭を抱えんばかりにして悩んだのに、父はまったく気にかけてくれなかった。
はははあたまをかかえんばかりにしてなやんだのに、ちちはまったくきにかけてくれなかった。Even though my mother worried so much she looked as if she would clutch her head in despair, my father paid no attention at all.
公演が終わったとき、会場には割れんばかりの拍手と歓声がわき起こった。
こうえんがおわったとき、かいじょうにはわれんばかりのはくしゅとかんせいがわきおこった。When the performance ended, thunderous applause and cheers rose up in the hall as if it might burst apart.
庭にはこぼれんばかりに、色とりどりの花束や贈り物をいただいた。
