Explanation
Used to express that something is not such a big matter, so reacting or evaluating it in a certain way is not appropriate.
Usage
It is used to restrain excessive emotional reactions or evaluations. It often attaches to verbs expressing feelings or judgments such as being surprised, disappointed, praising, or blaming.
Formation
Attach には当たらない to the dictionary form of a verb or to noun + する expressions.
Examples
小野さんは通勤に一時間半かかるそうだが、驚くには当たらない。ここでは珍しいことではない。
おのさんはつうきんにいちじかんはんかかるそうだが、おどろくにはあたらない。ここではめずらしいことではない。I hear Ms. Ono spends an hour and a half commuting, but that is not something to be surprised about. It is not unusual here.
今回の試験での結果を悲観するには当たりません。これから先、挽回の機会はまだ十分あります。
こんかいのしけんでのけっかをひかんするにはあたりません。これからさき、ばんかいのきかいはまだじゅうぶんあります。There is no need to be pessimistic about the result of this exam. There are still plenty of chances ahead to recover.
彼の発言はとがめるには当たらないと思う。彼の立場なら、ああ言うのも無理はない。
かれのはつげんはとがめるにはあたらないとおもう。かれのたちばなら、ああいうのもむりはない。I do not think his remark deserves blame. Given his position, it is understandable that he would say that.
あの旅館の応対は賞賛するには当たらない。宿としてなら、あの程度は当然だ。
あのりょかんのおうたいはしょうさんするにはあたらない。やどとしてなら、あのていどはとうぜんだ。The service at that inn is not something that especially deserves praise. For a lodging place, that level is only natural.
