Explanation
Used to express that something or someone is sufficient, worthy, or adequate for a certain evaluation or treatment.
Usage
It often appears in forms modifying nouns. It is used when something is worthy of trust, respect, attention, or representation. In negative usage, it often appears as 〜に足りない in set expressions meaning that something is not worth mentioning or taking up.
Formation
Attach に足る to the dictionary form of a verb or to a noun + する expression.
Examples
次代の首相は国民の代表と言うに足る人物であってほしい。
じだいのしゅしょうはこくみんのだいひょうというにたるじんぶつであってほしい。I hope the next prime minister will be someone worthy of being called a representative of the people.
オンライン上で得たその情報は、信用に足るものとはとても思えない。
オンラインじょうでえたそのじょうほうは、しんようにたるものとはとてもおもえない。That information obtained online does not seem to me at all to be something worthy of trust.
誰それがもめたとか別れたとかいう話は、取り上げるに足らないうわさにすぎない。
だれそれがもめたとかわかれたとかいうはなしは、とりあげるにたりないうわさにすぎない。Stories about who quarreled with whom or who broke up are nothing more than rumors not worth taking up.
