Explanation

Used to express that something is worth doing, seeing, hearing, appreciating, or discussing, or conversely that it is too unpleasant to bear or not worth doing so.

Usage

It is used only with a limited set of verbs such as 見る, 聞く, 鑑賞する, 批判する, or 議論する. Depending on the context, it can mean either that something has enough value for such treatment or that it is too painful, offensive, or poor to endure or be worth it.

Formation

Attach に堪える or に堪えない to the dictionary form of a verb or to a noun + する expression.

Examples

優れた児童文学は、大人が読んで味わうに堪えるものだ。

すぐれたじどうぶんがくは、おとながよんであじわうにたえるものだ。

Excellent children's literature is something that even adults can read and appreciate fully.

この説はまだ裏づけが乏しく、詳しい検討や議論に堪えるものではない。

このせつはまだうらづけがとぼしく、くわしいけんとうやぎろんにたえるものではない。

This theory still lacks supporting evidence and is not something that can withstand detailed examination or discussion.

他人の陰口は聞くに堪えない

たにんのかげぐちはきくにたえない。

Listening to malicious talk behind someone's back is unbearable.

こうした醜聞の記事は読むに堪えない

こうしたしゅうぶんのきじはよむにたえない。

Articles of this kind of scandal are too unpleasant to read.
