Explanation

Used to express that a feeling is so strong that it cannot be suppressed.

Usage

It attaches to a limited set of nouns expressing emotions, such as gratitude, deep emotion, joy, or regret. It indicates that the speaker feels that emotion very strongly. The subject is usually first person, though it is often omitted.

Formation

Attach に堪えない to a noun expressing emotion.

Examples

ご多忙の中、これほど多くの方にお運びいただき、感謝に堪えません。

ごたぼうのなか、これほどおおくのかたにおはこびいただき、かんしゃにたえません。

So many people have come despite their busy schedules, and I cannot adequately express my gratitude.

小野君がこのような栄誉を受けたことは、友人である私も喜びに堪えません。

おのくんがこのようなえいよをうけたことは、ゆうじんであるわたしもよろこびにたえません。

As Ono's friend, I too cannot contain my joy that he has received such an honor.

十分に確かめていればこのような失敗は避けられたかもしれないと思うと、悔恨の念に堪えない。

じゅうぶんにたしかめていればこのようなしっぱいはさけられたかもしれないとおもうと、かいこんのねんにたえない。
