Explanation
Used to express that, considering the situation or social norms, it is unavoidable that one must do something.
Usage
It is used when something cannot simply be left as it is and some action is inevitably required. It often reflects social expectation, consequence, or necessity rather than a purely personal feeling. 〜ずにはすまない is the more formal expression.
Formation
Attach ないではすまない to the nai-form of a verb. Attach ずにはすまない to the zu-form of a verb. With する, use せずにはすまない.
Examples
人の心を深く傷つけてしまったなら、きちんと謝らないではすまない。
ひとのこころをふかくきずつけてしまったなら、きちんとあやまらないではすまない。If you have deeply hurt someone's feelings, you cannot get away without apologizing properly.
家のお金を勝手に持ち出したなんて、親に知られたら厳しく叱られないではすまないぞ。
いえのおかねをかってにもちだしたなんて、おやにしられたらきびしくしかられないではすまないぞ。If your parents find out you took money from the house without permission, you will not get away without being severely scolded.
集合住宅で猫を飼えば、隠しているつもりでも近所の人に気づかれずにはすまないだろう。
しゅうごうじゅうたくでねこをかえば、かくしているつもりでもきんじょのひとにきづかれずにはすまないだろう。If you keep a cat in an apartment building, then even if you think you are hiding it, the neighbors will inevitably notice.
このままの経営状態が続けば、資金を借りずにはすまない。
このままのけいえいじょうたいがつづけば、しきんをかりずにはすまない。If the business situation continues like this, we will inevitably have to borrow funds.
