Explanation
Used to express that someone wants to do something, but cannot because of some circumstance.
Usage
The same verb is used before and after. The latter verb appears in the negative potential form. The pattern 〜に〜ない often describes psychological or situational inability, while 〜（よ）うにも〜ない often describes physical or practical impossibility.
Formation
Use the dictionary form of a verb + に + the negative potential form of the same verb, or the volitional form + にも + the negative potential form of the same verb.
Examples
果物をたくさんもらったが、食べきれない。捨てるに捨てられず困っている。
くだものをたくさんもらったが、たべきれない。すてるにすてられずこまっている。I received a lot of fruit, but I cannot finish it all. I am troubled because I cannot bring myself to throw it away.
弟に大事な写真を破られて、泣くに泣けない気持ちだった。
おとうとにだいじなしゃしんをやぶられて、なくになけないきもちだった。My younger brother tore an important photograph, and I felt as if I could neither cry nor do anything about it.
彼は別れの言葉も告げずに会社を去った。何か言うに言えない事情があったのだろうか。
かれはわかれのことばもつげずにかいしゃをさった。なにかいうにいえないじじょうがあったのだろうか。He left the company without even saying goodbye. I wonder if there was some reason he simply could not bring himself to say.
連絡先がわからなくて、連絡しようにも連絡できなかった。
れんらくさきがわからなくて、れんらくしようにもれんらくできなかった。I did want to get in touch, but since I did not know the contact information, I simply could not.
当時、子どもが自転車を欲しがったが、暮らしに余裕がなくて買ってやろうにも買ってやれなかった。
とうじ、こどもがじてんしゃをほしがったが、くらしによゆうがなくてかってやろうにもかってやれなかった。At that time my child wanted a bicycle, but because money was tight, even though I wanted to buy one, I could not.
