Explanation
Used to express that something is even more so than usual, more than before, or more than something else.
Usage
It attaches to nouns expressing ordinary situations, previous situations, or standards of comparison. It can also follow interrogative words to express a superlative sense, such as 'more than ever' or 'more than anything else.' A negative sentence does not normally follow.
Formation
Attach にもまして to a noun or to an interrogative word.
Examples
去年は猛暑で連日気温が三十二度を超えたが、今年は去年にもまして暑さがこたえる。
きょねんはもうしょでれんじつきおんがさんじゅうにどをこえたが、ことしはきょねんにもましてあつさがこたえる。Last year was extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 32 degrees day after day, but this year the heat feels even harsher than last year.
自分の仕事のことにもまして気がかりなのは、母の病状のことだ。
じぶんのしごとのことにもましてきがかりなのは、ははのびょうじょうのことだ。What worries me even more than my own work is my mother's condition.
もともと物覚えは得意ではなかったが、近ごろは以前にもまして忘れっぽくなった。
もともとものおぼえはとくいではなかったが、ちかごろはいぜんにもましてわすれっぽくなった。I was never especially good at remembering things to begin with, but lately I have become even more forgetful than before.
式典の日の彼女は、いつにもまして気品があり美しかった。
しきてんのひのかのじょは、いつにもましてきひんがありうつくしかった。On the day of the ceremony, she was more elegant and beautiful than ever.
