Explanation
Used to express that although something does not reach an ideal, extreme, or full level, it still reaches a somewhat lower but acceptable level.
Usage
It attaches to words expressing an ideal or extreme state. The following clause presents a level that is somewhat below that final or ideal point, but still sufficient or meaningful.
Formation
Attach までも to the nai-form of a verb. It is also used in forms such as Nとはいかないまでも and Nとは言わないまでも.
Examples
舞台の専門家にはなれないまでも、芝居にはこれからも長く関わっていくつもりだ。
ぶたいのせんもんかにはなれないまでも、しばいにはこれからもながくかかわっていくつもりだ。Even if I may not be able to become a stage professional, I intend to stay involved with theater for a long time to come.
私たち夫婦は海外旅行などのぜいたくはできないまでも、不自由のない穏やかな暮らしを送っています。
わたしたちふうふはかいがいりょこうなどのぜいたくはできないまでも、ふじゆうのないおだやかなくらしをおくっています。Even if my spouse and I cannot afford luxuries like overseas travel, we are living a calm and comfortable life without hardship.
明日は山歩きだ。快晴とはいかないまでも、せめて曇り空くらいで雨は降らないでほしい。
