Explanation
Used to present an extreme example and say that in that case the situation is especially bad or striking.
Usage
It expresses the speaker's evaluation that something is appalling, excessive, or beyond the norm as a whole. It attaches to examples that represent an extreme degree, and the following clause explains what kind of state that example is in.
Formation
Attach に至っては to a noun.
Examples
閉店する店が相次いでいる。B百貨店に至っては、すでに四つの支店が営業を終えた。
へいてんするみせがあいついでいる。びーひゃっかてんにいたっては、すでによっつのしてんがえいぎょうをおえた。Stores are closing one after another. In the case of Department Store B, as an extreme example, four branches have already ended operations.
毎年この地域は洪水の被害を受ける。九州北部に至っては、今年だけでもう三度目だ。
まいとしこのちいきはこうずいのひがいをうける。きゅうしゅうほくぶにいたっては、ことしだけでもうさんどめだ。This region suffers flood damage every year. In northern Kyushu, in particular, it has already happened for the third time this year alone.
私は理系の科目が苦手だった。化学に至ってはほとんど内容が頭に入らなかった。
わたしはりけいのかもくがにがてだった。かがくにいたってはほとんどないようがあたまにはいらなかった。I was poor at science subjects. When it came to chemistry in particular, almost none of the content stayed in my head.
