Explanation
Used to compare two things in a strongly contrasting way, with the nuance that one is good while the other is bad, or vice versa.
Usage
It is not a neutral comparison of facts. It compares two things through the speaker's subjective evaluation, such as good versus bad. It is not used for comparing mere assumptions or inferred matters.
Formation
Attach にひきかえ to a noun, or to a clause with の. With na-adjectives and nouns, forms such as ナAな + の and Nである + の are used.
Examples
厳しい時代の中でも懸命に生きているその主人公にひきかえ、今の私は何と怠けているのだろう。
きびしいじだいのなかでもけんめいにいきているそのしゅじんこうにひきかえ、いまのわたしはなんとなまけているのだろう。In contrast to that protagonist who lives so earnestly even in harsh times, how lazy I am now.
姉が整った部屋を好むのにひきかえ、妹はいつも机の上まで散らかしていて困ったものだ。
あねがととのったへやをこのむのにひきかえ、いもうとはいつもつくえのうえまでちらかしていてこまったものだ。In contrast to my older sister, who likes a tidy room, my younger sister is always making even her desk a mess, and it is quite troublesome.
前日までの荒れた空模様にひきかえ、運動会の当日はさわやかによく晴れて何よりだった。
