Explanation
Used to express that something happens precisely because of a special situation or condition, or that something holds true even under such a condition.
Usage
It is a formal expression. It attaches to nouns indicating circumstances, periods, places, or situations. The following clause either describes something that occurs only in that condition, or something that remains true contrary to that condition. In the latter case, にあっても may be used.
Formation
Attach にあって to a noun. When expressing contrast such as 'even in that situation,' にあっても is also used.
Examples
この植物は乾いた土地にあって、水分をたくわえることで命をつないでいる。
このしょくぶつはかわいたとちにあって、すいぶんをたくわえることでいのちをつないでいる。This plant survives in dry land by storing moisture.
昭和の初期にあって、この町はまさに発展の途中にあり、人々は活気に満ちていた。
しょうわのしょきにあって、このまちはまさにはってんのとちゅうにあり、ひとびとはかっきにみちていた。In the early Showa period, this town was truly in the midst of development, and the people were full of energy.
近ごろの不景気にあっても、この会社の商品は人気が衰えていない。
ちかごろのふけいきにあっても、このかいしゃのしょうひんはにんきがおとろえていない。Even in the recent economic slump, this company's products have not lost their popularity.
