Explanation
Used to express either that if there is no other way, one is prepared to do something, or that what one did was merely that and nothing more.
Usage
In one use, it shows the speaker's determination that doing it is not such a big matter if necessary. It is often used with conditional clauses and refers to present or future situations. In the other use, it downplays the meaning of one's own action, saying it was only that and nothing more.
Formation
Attach までだ or までのことだ to the dictionary form of a verb. In the 'merely did that' use, the ta-form is also used.
Examples
今日じゅうに全部終わらなければ、翌日に持ち越して続けるまでだ。
きょうじゅうにぜんぶおわらなければ、よくじつにもちこしてつづけるまでだ。If everything cannot be finished today, then I will simply carry it over and continue the next day.
誰も手を貸してくれないのなら、自分一人でやってみるまでだ。
だれもてをかしてくれないのなら、じぶんひとりでやってみるまでだ。If no one is willing to help, then I will simply try doing it by myself.
こちらの提案が受け入れられない場合は、この計画を見送るまでのことだ。
こちらのていあんがうけいれられないばあいは、このけいかくをみおくるまでのことだ。If our proposal cannot be accepted, then it only means we will shelve this plan.
ありがたい言葉をいただきましたが、私はただ自分に課せられた役目を果たしたまでです。
ありがたいことばをいただきましたが、わたしはただじぶんにかせられたやくめをはたしたまでです。I am grateful for your kind words, but I merely fulfilled the role that had been entrusted to me.
先日の連絡は、あなたの様子が気にかかったので一言添えたまでで、ほかに意図はありません。
せんじつのれんらくは、あなたのようすがきにかかったのでひとことそえたまでで、ほかにいとはありません。My message the other day was only to add a brief word because I was concerned about how you were doing; I had no other intention.
