Explanation
Used to express that if something happens, everything will come to nothing and nothing more can be done.
Usage
It often appears in the form 〜ても…ばそれまでだ. It conveys that if a certain condition is met, all previous effort will be wasted or the matter will be over. It can also be used in set phrases such as 好みの問題と言われればそれまでだ.
Formation
Attach それまでだ to the conditional ば-form of a verb.
Examples
人間、命を落とせばそれまでだ。生きているうちにやれることをやっておこう。
にんげん、いのちをおとせばそれまでだ。いきているうちにやれることをやっておこう。If a person loses their life, that is the end of it. Let us do what we can while we are still alive.
どれほど練習でうまくできても、本番で失敗すればそれまでだ。
どれほどれんしゅうでうまくできても、ほんばんでしっぱいすればそれまでだ。No matter how well you do in practice, if you fail in the real performance, that is the end of it.
どんなに立派な施設を建てても、十分に活用されなければそれまでだ。
どんなにりっぱなしせつをたてても、じゅうぶんにかつようされなければそれまでだ。No matter how splendid a facility is built, if it is not fully used, that is the end of the matter.
結局は好みの違いと言われればそれまでだが、私はこの喫茶店の雰囲気がどうにも好きになれない。
けっきょくはこのみのちがいといわれればそれまでだが、わたしはこのきっさてんのふんいきがどうにもすきになれない。In the end, if you say it is simply a matter of taste, that may be the end of the discussion, but I just cannot come to like the atmosphere of this café.
