Explanation
Used to express that rather than ending up in some undesirable situation, another option would be better.
Usage
It presents a situation the speaker considers especially undesirable or the worst case. The following clause states an alternative that the speaker thinks is preferable by comparison.
Formation
Attach くらいなら to the dictionary form of a verb.
Examples
混み合った電車に乗るくらいなら、駅まで三十分歩くほうがいい。
こみあったでんしゃにのるくらいなら、えきまでさんじゅっぷんあるくほうがいい。Rather than getting on a crowded train, I would rather walk thirty minutes to the station.
その上着、処分するんですか。捨てるくらいなら、わたしに譲ってください。わたしが着ます。
そのうわぎ、しょぶんするんですか。すてるくらいなら、わたしにゆずってください。わたしがきます。Are you getting rid of that jacket? Rather than throwing it away, please give it to me. I will wear it.
途中で投げ出すくらいなら、最初から引き受けないほうがよかったのに。
とちゅうでなげだすくらいなら、さいしょからひきうけないほうがよかったのに。If you were going to give up halfway, it would have been better not to take it on from the start.
