Explanation
Used to express that while someone is engaged in their main occupation or principal activity, they also do another separate activity.
Usage
It attaches to words that indicate a person's main job or primary role. The following clause describes another social, cultural, or secondary activity carried out alongside that main occupation.
Formation
Attach かたわら to noun + の or to the dictionary form of a verb.
Examples
彼は講師の仕事をするかたわら、随筆や評論を書いている。
かれはこうしのしごとをするかたわら、ずいひつやひょうろんをかいている。While working as an instructor, he also writes essays and critiques.
私は役所勤めのかたわら、地域の子どもたちに野球を教えています。
わたしはやくしょづとめのかたわら、ちいきのこどもたちにやきゅうをおしえています。Alongside my government office job, I teach baseball to local children.
母は家庭を支えるかたわら、外国人に日本語を教える活動にも参加している。
はははかていをささえるかたわら、がいこくじんににほんごをおしえるかつどうにもさんかしている。While supporting the household, my mother also takes part in activities teaching Japanese to foreigners.
