Explanation
Used to express apology or gratitude when someone is troubled or interrupted even though they are in a certain situation.
Usage
It attaches to expressions showing an ongoing state or circumstance of the other person. It is a polite, somewhat formal expression used when one is sorry for causing trouble or thankful despite causing inconvenience. It is often followed by an apology or gratitude.
Formation
Attach ところを to the plain form, including ナ-adjective + な and noun + の.
Examples
早めにご連絡しなければならないところを、遅くなってしまい誠に申し訳ありません。
はやめにごれんらくしなければならないところを、おそくなってしまいまことにもうしわけありません。I sincerely apologize for being late in contacting you, even though I should have informed you earlier.
お忙しいところを恐れ入ります。少しだけお時間をいただいてもよろしいでしょうか。
おいそがしいところをおそれいります。すこしだけおじかんをいただいてもよろしいでしょうか。I am sorry to trouble you while you are busy. May I have just a little of your time?
こちらからごあいさつに伺うべきところを、先にお越しいただきまして、かえって恐縮しております。
