Explanation
Used to express that as soon as one action happens, the next action occurs immediately after it.
Usage
Attaches to verbs that express instantaneous actions. The following clause usually describes an unexpected or striking result. It is not used with the speaker's intention, wishes, commands, or invitations.
Formation
Attach が早いか to the dictionary form or た-form of a verb.
Examples
海外旅行に出発する日、山田さんは空港に着くが早いか、売店へ飛び込んだ。
かいがいりょこうにしゅっぱつするひ、やまださんはくうこうにつくがはやいか、ばいてんへとびこんだ。On the day of his overseas trip, as soon as Yamada arrived at the airport, he rushed into a shop.
うちの子はいつも学校から戻ってきて、ランドセルを下ろすが早いか、公園へ遊びに出かけてしまう。
うちのこはいつもがっこうからもどってきて、ランドセルをおろすがはやいか、こうえんへあそびにでかけてしまう。My child always comes home from school, and as soon as they put down their schoolbag, they head out to play in the park.
今朝、寝坊した夫は、朝食を口に入れるが早いか、玄関を飛び出していった。
けさ、ねぼうしたおっとは、ちょうしょくをくちにいれるがはやいか、げんかんをとびだしていった。This morning, my oversleeping husband barely put breakfast into his mouth before dashing out the front door.
評判のその本は、店先に並べられたが早いか、たちまち売り切れていった。
ひょうばんのそのほんは、みせさきにならべられたがはやいか、たちまちうりきれていった。That well-reviewed book sold out almost immediately as soon as it was put on display at the storefront.
