Explanation
Used to say that if it were something else, such behavior might be understandable, but since it is not, that way of thinking or acting is not appropriate.
Usage
It is a spoken expression. It often presents a category or situation that would make the behavior understandable, then denies that this is the actual case. The following clause usually contains the speaker's judgment, criticism, advice, or rebuttal.
Formation
Attach ではあるまいし to a noun. Related spoken patterns such as 〜のではあるまいし and 〜わけではあるまいし are also used.
Examples
幼い子どもではあるまいし、眠かったりおなかがすいたりするだけでそんなに不機嫌な顔をするものではない。
おさないこどもではあるまいし、ねむかったりおなかがすいたりするだけでそんなにふきげんなかおをするものではない。It is not as if you were a little child, so you should not make such a sulky face just because you are sleepy or hungry.
犬や猫ではあるまいし、上の人の言うことにただ従うだけなんてまっぴらだ。
いぬやねこではあるまいし、うえのひとのいうことにただしたがうだけなんてまっぴらだ。It is not as if I were a dog or a cat, so I want nothing to do with simply obeying whatever a superior says.
就職面接は初めてではあるまいし、今回はどうしてそんなに上がっているの？
しゅうしょくめんせつははじめてではあるまいし、こんかいはどうしてそんなにあがっているの？It is not as if this were your first job interview, so why are you so nervous this time?
君だけが悪かったわけではあるまいし、そんなに自分を責めることはないよ。
きみだけがわるかったわけではあるまいし、そんなにじぶんをせめることはないよ。It is not as if only you were at fault, so there is no need to blame yourself that much.
